Cooling the Fires of August

Antahkarana Shield

In case anyone has not noticed, for the past couple of weeks, the Earth has been ringing like a bell from earthquakes from Japan to Russia to the Aleutian Islands off the Alaska cost. This is, of course, the Ring of Fire, which spans an arc of the Earth Mother.

We will be holding our Medicine Wheel ceremony this month to attempt to cool the fires, with a special weeknight ceremony, rather than the usual weekend, on Tuesday, Aug. 14, at 7 p.m. This is two days past the New Moon, to push the energy forward. We can use the ancient Antahkarana symbol to provide healing for the Earth. See the illustration. This particular Antahkarana symbol was drawn by Annette Waya and is located across from the first page of my new book, "Finding Sanctuary in Nature: Simple Ceremonies in the Native American Tradition for Healing Yourself and Others," which is in bookstores now.

The symbol is also on the Web page and you can print it out for ceremonial use. You may focus on this symbol, or put it in your prayer circle or medicine wheel to do ceremony for the Earth. (The procedure is more fully outlined in the book.) In this way, you may do Earth healing at any time, with others or apart (though we are never truly alone, with all our guides, spirits and power animals with us). You may wish to join us in our ceremony here Aug. 14, in concert, even if you are physically far away; we will begin at 7 p.m.

Astrology A Crazy-Quilt

This is a crazy-quilt time astrologically, a fact you may have noticed in your personal life. :-)

Among the Star Happenings:

The Sun entered Leo July 22 and will enter Virgo August 23.
New Moon is August 12

Venus went retrograde July 27 and will go direct Sept. 7.

Jupiter went retrograde April 5 and goes direct Aug. 7 in Sagittarius.

Uranus went retrograde June 23 and goes direct Nov. 24.

Nepture went retrograde May 24 and goes direct Oct. 31.

Pluto went retrograde March 31 and goes direct Sept. 6.

(For more information, visit http://www.StarPriestess.com )

So, as you can see, there are a lot of "comings and goings" in various phases of our psyche. Add to that the ancient interpretations of this time of year, and, well, it's a hot time in the old town tonight!

Indeed, this is a very special time of year. We may think it's just hot. And in Mississippi, August, for sure, it's hot! But the power of this time has been recognized for thousands of years.

Medicine Wheel Turning West

In the Medicine Wheel of the seasons, we have just passed the South with the Summer Solstice in June; the greatest time of vigor, youth, beauty and healing. We are headed, believe it or not, toward the West, of fall, or harvest. If that seems far away, it's not. On the July 29, we passed the exact quarter between Summer Solstice and Fall Equinox. These cross-quarter times are critical points that allow portals to open, as well. For example, each year at this time has been what's called The Lion's Gate portal, or 8:8 portal. Some call this The Isis Portal.

It was around this time (July 20th to August 27) in ancient Egypt when the star Sirius (which they called Auset, Egyptian for Isis, and the Romans called the dog star) arose from the burning glare of the sun, from death to life, as an omen of feminine fire reborning and a new year of mysteries. This commencement from the heliacal rising of Sirius (which Hesiod placed the ending of the period at 50 days after the Summer solstice) was celebrated like a new year in modern terms, but with much deeper spiritual significance.

Dog Days Are Upon Us!

According to Philip Vandenberg, in "The Curse of the Pharaohs," "an
archeologist named Duncan MacNaughton discovered in 1932 that the long dark
tunnels in the Great Pyramid of Cheops function as telescopes, making the stars
visible even in the daytime. The Greater Pyramid is oriented, according to
MacNaughton, to give a view, from the King's Chamber, of the area of the
southern sky in which Sirius moves throughout the year.
So, when Sirius (Isis) emerged from the Sun was a time of great rejoicing.
This time of year was considered so hot because they believed this star, the brightest in the heavens, added to the Sun's heat. Since the Romans called Sirius the dog star, this became known as the dog days.
In Africa, a tribe known as the Dogons tells of being visited by star beings
from Sirius, and described Sirius as actually being a binary star - with a
faint companion sun - which scientists did not discover with telescopes until
1862.

Portal For The Dead; Guide For The Living

In Egypt, it was believed that souls went to Sirius after death and resided
there. The openings in the Great Pyramid were meant to be guide ways for the
soul, with the pyramid oriented so that they were portals for the constellation
Orion, which denoted for them Osiris, and Sirius (Isis-Sothis).
Of course, Drum Circle members know that my calico cat, Isis, is named such
because she appeared on my doorstep - as an abused and neglected kitten (her
and her brothers and sisters apparently thrown from a speeding car)
miraculously from the dead - at this time, July 26, 2002, now 5 years ago.
I guess, since I nurtured her back to health - with heavy doses of Reiki - that
the old Isis/Osiris legend was reversed. I put her back together, rather than
vice versa. (Or, did I? Or, did she?) A karma of sorts?

World Stood Still? Planets Changed Course?

There is a bit of confusion among scholars about Isis being to the Egyptians both the planet Venus (which the Sumerians revered for Isis) and the star Sirius. It's possible that Venus at one time had a very different orbit than it had today and ancient texts show a most unusual occurrence (from: http://www.interpres.cz/worag/cosmol/sothis.htm):
In the Soochow Astronomical Chart, an eight-centuries-old inscription in stone,
in a section that deals with past irregularities in the heavens, there is the
following statement: "Once T'ai-P'ai (Venus) suddenly ran into Lang Hsing (Wolf
Star, Sirius), though it is more than 40 degrees south of the Yellow Road."
The Yellow Road is the ecliptic. The same ancient tradition was referred to by
the early eighth-century A.D. Chinese astronomer Y-hang. As told by Gaubil, Y-
hang wrote that "in the time of Tsin one saw the star Sirius eclipsed by the
planet Venus. Y-hang, after having reported this alleged observation, assures
that Sirius has 40 degrees south latitude, and that therefore Heaven changed
the course of this planet in the time of Tsin."
This would mean that Venus was not traveling along the normal route of the
planets, the Ecliptic. Indeed, in some ancient Egyptian drawings, Isis is shown
riding a dog.
In any event, there are mysteries surrounding Isis in the skies that scientists
today have not unraveled. Some say that Venus shifted course the same time as another planet disappeared, that the world stood still, and other changes. It's a powerful portal, to be sure.

The Lion's Gate, Isis or 8:8 Portal
With the rise of Sirius, a "portal" of sorts is opened. It annually goes on
until around the end of August. It was known in ancient Egypt as a time to
celebrate Isis, the goddess, a sacred time, a time of rejuvenation, a new year,
in which the female principle was revered, reborn.
We can use this energy, to rebalance the world we live in. Portals are simply openings that allow celestial energy to stream through unimpeded, from multiple dimensions. For those who can journey shamanically, they can offer unique visions of places not normally seen. In ceremony, they add power.

The pyramids are aligned for this time, as portals; it means change, sometimes disruption, but positive change, breaking down old systems; a good time to launch new projects.
In personal terms, as with the solar flares, winds, etc., it can mean difficulty in relationships; but it's always for the good, as it reflects an inner impulse for self-direction for what really matters in spiritual growth.
The energies can be harnessed to help direct and orient toward personal goals.
Bear this in mind as you come to drum; it will be a New Moon drumming and a rare weekday ceremony on the 14th (the New Moon on the 12th), or drum with us from afar, using the Antahkarana symbol in the book or on the Web page. You will notice that it is drawn within a medicine wheel, so that it already is situated for uniting energies - bring the four directions, unolis, into one, and allowing the power of uniting to go out to all the universe.

On the Web page also is an article, "The Language of the Star Beings, Dolphins & Whales" which describes the universal alphabet, which may also be used.
Be open to the changes within you and without you and how you can harness this
energy, and that of the Earth, solar and galactic changes occurring to help us
remember who we really are.
Aho.

This 'N' That

By Jim PathFinder Ewing (Nvnehi Awatisgi)

A note about Fire The Grid!
As you may remember, on July 17, we held special ceremony here to "fire the grid," so to speak, a worldwide ceremony of prayer held at a special astrological time.
I was surprised to read as the date approached that some people had "concerns" about it, that it could be harmful, or that it... well, all manner of fears were expressed.
It's a sad fact that since 9-11, it seems, everyone is fearful of everything. That's the "energy" of our world today, fear, and fear fanned by war, or fear of war. That, unfortunately, is the state of our world.... that is, if we let it be.
(You may wish to read The Effect of War & Terror On The Planetary Consciousnesson the Web page.)
Sadly, I well remember how the world seemed to "shut down" after we invaded Iraq. I was set, for example, to do a series of teachings Out West that was suddently canceled. A friend who teaches Celtic shamanism had his overseas bookings cancelled. We've really not recovered. In a atmosphere of war and fear, it's difficult to "let go" to allow trust and higher feelings to come forward. If you read the books of David Icke, it becomes clear why: some don't want the mass of humanity to ever ascend, certainly not to exist within higher levels of awareness.
Hurricane Katrina has had a similar effect here in the South. In March, we were invited to do special Medicine Wheel Ceremony for health care givers who were burned out by helping so many people for so long. It should be noted that even today, almost exactly two years since Katrina struck Aug. 29, 2005, there are 65,900 Hurricane Katrina victims still housed in about 24,400 of the trailers in Mississippi. This level of misery cannot be measured.
When we did ceremony at Ocean Springs March 9, the land was so hungry for positive energy, grass grew as we did ceremony! A bald eagle circled overhead and actually swooped down behind me and grabbed prey while I was doing ceremony. The land, the water, the Earth is thirsty, starved, for our prayers for healing, health and wholeness.
Yet, talking to friends on the Coast, many of whom have had years of Reiki and other training, they are drained, too -- too tired, to worn out, too overwhelmed by the immensity of the devastation to practice their healing craft. How sad. How horrible!
If there is ever a time to pray and do ceremony, it is now! Not only here, but all across the Earth. Anytime. Anywhere. By Everyone!
That is why I laughed so, deeply, at the fears and "controversy" over Fire the Grid.
How could anyone find fear in prayer?
To my mind is this: I really don't care who is sponsoring a worldwide prayer event, or what their specific motivation may be. Anytime people are eager, happy and looking forward to pray for healing of the Earth and all beings, who could say no???
By the way, the "grid" referred to is the Christ Consciousness Grid that surrounds the Earth. Or, in native way, is referred to as The Plume of Quetzalcoatl
There is nothing sinister about it, and it is surrounding the Earth at all times. It is the energetic layer that we connect with when we want to raise the vibration rate of a place (see my book "Clearing: A Guide to Liberating Energies Trapped in Buildings and Lands"). It is also seen as a permeable layer that must be gone through when doing shamanic journey to the upper world, though it's often just seen as clouds or as "feeling."
Bottom line: Pray! Connect with the Grid! But, more important, pray.
Aho.

I've been reading a wonderful book just out by Ken Eaglefeather titled
Toltec Dreaming: Don Juan's Teachings on the Energy Body (Bear & Co., 272 pages, June 22, 1007; $16). He was kind enough to send me an advance copy, which I endorsed:

"In Dreaming, Ken Eagle Feather masterfully outlines the appearance of Power in our lives as a shamanic principle that he shows can be easily recognized, and explores the power of dreaming as an active force that can define our lives in profound ways. As with his other books, Eagle Feather explains complex shamanic principles of the Toltec tradition as taught to him personally by don Juan Matus, the shaman many have come to know through the books of Carlos Castaneda. For the discerning Castaneda student, Eagle Feather provides painstakingly researched references including page numbers for ideas covered in Castaneda's books for easy reference. But Eagle Feather demonstrates his proficiency of the subject matter by expanding on the ideas and principles with examples from his own life, as well as offering new avenues of thought -- and exercises -- for readers. For novices to shamanism to the well-read, Dreaming offers new insights into the nature of the energy body that complement Eastern concepts, while also refining that which is known of Toltec ideas. In Dreaming, Ken Eagle Father demonstrates he is a man of knowledge in his own right, sharing a rare gift of inestimable value."

But, I'd go a bit further to say that all of Ken's books are worth reading, especially if you are "into" shamanism. For those who follow Castaneda's work, he has references to his books with the concepts; but, more importantly, in my mind, Ken offers a way of seeing the world that takes don Juan's and applies it to the world.

I read all the Castaneda books when they came out nearly 40 years ago, and have practiced shamanism all my life. Some of the teachings of don Juan, I believe, were horribly distorted, and later books bear me out, especially regarding the use of psychotropic drugs. That's because, I believe, Castaneda was a literalist, or too left-brained, to understand the concepts and so don Juan and his fellow shamans dramatized and even traumatized Castaneda so that they could "get through" to him.

Anyone who actually practices shamanic journey (which my next book, "Healing Plants and Animals from a distance Curative Principles and Applications" will introduce to the trilogy) knows in Castaneda's books where don Juan was speaking, and were left-brained suppositions entered in.

What I like about Ken's books are that anyone, repeat anyone, can get a clear idea of the shaman's path from reading him - whether one practices or not - and be sure that they are getting "the straight skinny."

I don't agree with much of the Toltec way, as I believe it is too foreign for most average Americans to accept, that is, truly adopt; but the way of viewing the world in shamanic terms as outlined by Castaneda has become part of the cultural currency, so it's useful to employ. As a method, it's easy to point to the nagual and tonal and explain being and nonbeing in shamanic terms, for example. Whether we are all fodder for the Eagle, well, that's a philosophic point perhaps best left to left-brained individuals with lots of time on their hands. I believe, as Ken notes, that how we view our world is a product of "cuing," that is, connecting to select understandings that join to make a world view. Some of the concepts of the Toltec way, in my mind, are too harsh, they stem from a world in which "lack" is the order of the day, breeding a stoicism that teeters on nihilism. My world is a much more joyful world, filled with exciting possibilities. It's also a lot less lonely.

But much of what Ken writes about are actual practical applications that are useful and described in a way that can become powerful tools used as second nature. For example, stalking your weaknesses, or predilections, or being aware when your controlled folly comes forward. One tool I've been using a lot lately, reminded of it reading Ken's book, is recapitulation. Simply stated, and Ken does much better in the book, that's when you remember an event that is freighted with negative emotions and walk through it again, reexperiencing every emotion, every nuance of the event, and allowing it to be more fully imprinted from a larger point of view. This allows for tremendous inner growth and healing by taking the "charge" out of past negative events, and it frees energy for use now. I would recommend those who read my books, especially using inventory to allow themselves to become more present, aware and allowing who they really are to come forward, to practice recapitulation, as well.
If you are looking for a good book on shamanism, Ken Eaglefeather's "Dreaming" is a good one; also get a copy of his "The Toltec Way." Both are excellent.

Then, of course, there are my books:

(Five Stars) 'Finding Sanctuary' Recommended, July 7, 2007

Reviewer: Sarah Ann

"I enjoyed every page. The author explained simple ceremonies without violating tribal privacy. Though I have participated in ceremonies for many years, I still found descriptions in the book where I thought 'Oh, so THAT'S why we do that'. The book was easy to read thanks to the clear and direct writing style. I hope Jim PathFinder Ewing continues writing."

In our society, we talk of 'sick building syndrome.' Here is a spiritual way to clear our lands and buildings of the very essence of that sickness. Ascension Test: The Mind Prison

Our minds are always busy, always coming up with reasons and excuses to do as we do, whatever it is, or isn't that we choose. But Creator doesn't see this one way or the other; Creator sees all ways. Imagine that. Imagine seeing a spider's web going out in all directions, going from inside out and outside in and all ways at once. Each thread is a life, a reason, a justification; all thoughts. But what is behind the thoughts? Behind the web? Behind the web is Creator, all things that can be, in addition to all things that are. We are often trapped in the web - the mind prison - of reasons, beliefs, justifications. But it's the Power behind the web that is Creator's Power, the Power to be. If we only focus on being - being in a good way - in concert with that Power, we will find our web will be less confining, more fluid, a path of liberation and a prison no more.

Aho.

Thought for The Day:

"One individual who lives and vibrates to the energy of optimism and a willingness to be nonjudgmental of others will counterbalance the negativity of 90,000 individuals who calibrate at the lower weakening levels."
