Summer Solstice Celebrated

By Jim PathFinder Ewing (Nvnehi Awatisgi)

We have just returned from our Green Corn Festival in Buffalo, Texas.
It was a wonderful time of ceremonies of gratitude and healing, visiting and enjoying.

In ancient days, the Cherokee people celebrated the ripening corn
– u-ne-tla-nv – literally, “new crop of corn.”

Down in Texas, the planting time is earlier than the traditional lands of Tennessee
and North Carolina, so the time for the festival – when the first green corns were
coming forth – is earlier. Most hold Green Corn festivals in June and July.

But it’s interesting that here in Mississippi, Annette Waya and I planted corn in
our garden early – Cherokee White Eagle, Sacred Red and Hopi Blue --
and it’s now ripening, too. Maybe we’ll be eating red, white and blue corn by July 4!

Ordinarily, in Mississippi, people don’t plant until after Easter (some plant on Good Friday)
, since there’s usually a cold spell around then. We planted right before we went
to the First New Moon of Spring Festival, which this year was held March 23-25.
According to my calculations, since the New Moon and Spring Equinox were
within hours of each other, there was a 50-50 chance that “spring” would be early.

But, sure enough, as old timers had told, the weekend of Easter was a terrible
cold snap. From here to Memphis, gardeners called it “Black Sunday” since so
many gardens were ruined, with temperatures plunging into the 20s.
It actually snowed in Buffalo, Texas, only 90 miles north of Houston that weekend.
In Arkansas, our Bear brothers told us, it went below freezing for four days.

Here, we spread some plastic over some of the plants and Annette Waya drummed
and sang sacred songs. We had already dedicated the crops to Selu, Corn Maiden,
and other beings which seemed to be hanging about. By raising the vibration rate
of the land and plants and giving thanks to the beings of all kinds in the area, the
plants were spared. We suffered only a few wilted leaves, while others who had
planted lost their entire crops.

So, now, we have corn ripening and beautiful, big sunflowers!!!

sunflowerbee

Annette Waya took this picture in our garden on Sunday; notice the bumble bee! Notice
also the beautiful spiral of the seeds in the center. In my latest book, Finding Sanctuary
in Nature: Simple Ceremonies in the Native American Tradition for Healing Yourself and
Others, I wrote about the role of Sacred Geometry, such as this spiral found in nature
in healing and doing ceremony.

The Ripening Fruit

At the Green Corn Festival, I reminded the people that during the First New Moon of Spring
Festival, we planted seeds. This, our people had done for thousands of years.
Without seeds, there can be no crops. So, we consciously prepare the soil –
doing the work that is necessary to provide the right environment for growth.

Then, we take that which we have saved – the very best that we have to give and
have carefully selected, harvested from our lives – and give it away.

At the First New Moon of Spring Festival, I told the people that this process of giveaway
is essential for our well-being – that of all people, collectively and individually.

In Cherokee, this selfless giving is called ga-du-gi (Gah-doo-gee).
It literally means “putting together the bread.”

Just as many ingredients must be put together to make bread, so it is that many
people are required to give what they have for the people to thrive. When everyone
gives what they have, from the heart, then like bread, it all becomes something that
feeds a society, a community – individually and collectively.

So, I told the people: Watch what you plant. Watch what you say, watch what you do;
watch how you say and how you do, for words have power, and words followed with
action are more powerful still.

Do you think that words don’t have power? Consider the simple words: I love you.
How many young men and women’s hearts have been healed, their lives melded,
their destinies changed to become parents and grandparents with these simple words?
Followed by action? Love is the glue that cements nations, one person at a time.

Consider the simple words: I hate you. How many hearts have been broken, and
lives filled with despair from these words? How many lives have spiraled into
self-loathing, drug and alcohol addiction, even death, arising from these words

and the neglect and indifference that follows them? Hate is the poison that kills
cultures, one person at a time.

Collectively, love and hate can destroy or save the world. It’s up to each of us.

This I told the people: What you do now will bear fruit, and we’ll see what we harvest.

Making Room For Growth

So, at Green Corn, almost exactly two months later, I reminded them of those
words and asked to review their lives since then, what they had planted and what
they had reaped – what in the lives was ripening because of their words and actions.

And I told them: But whatever you have sown, it’s early yet. We see the ripening corn,
but it’s not the harvest time yet. There’s still time to weed and replant.

We’ll review again at Atahuna; the fall festival three months from now.

Here, Annette Waya and I have been clearing and cleaning out everything.
It’s in keeping with the times: Making room for the ripening corn
(whatever that might turn out to be!).

We have filled innumerable bags for recycling, and we just held a big Garage Sale
to get rid of things from storage. We’ll hold another one on July 4 to get rid of
the remaining “stuff.”

Just as words have energy, power, so do things. When we attach to things, we actually
lose some of our power to whatever it is that we attach to. Annette Waya has all her
“stuff” that we moved from Florida. And I have all my “stuff” -- some of which I
discovered upon looking at it, that I’ve been carting around since college days
30 years ago! That’s a lot of stuff!!!! That’s a lot of energy “bound up” in inertia,
in material “things.”

So, we’ve been clearing and cleaning.

‘Letting Go’ A Challenge!

The most fun – and at times most challenging and painful – was selling things
at the Garage Sale for a mere pittance. Yet, I knew it must be done. If I started
to haggle over price, or try to put a value on things that I thought they were worth,
then I was actually just re-attaching to the items that then would be lost, and then
would have to go through a grief process to cut the ties that I had remade!

So, I had to shift my perspective from selling things to seeing the process as gifting
people with things they might use or cherish – especially if they thought they
obtained some rare treasure at a bargain they could brag about to their friends
and families – and also from the perspective that people were actually paying
me to haul away stuff! :-) The people are giving me energy to part with things
I don’t need; in short, helping me detach and transcend.

In this, we’re all in the same boat. The more we can “let go” of and allow ourselves
to be free of, the better off, with all the Earth changes going on.
(See Allison Rae’s message below.)

When we let go of things, we allow new things to appear, our lives to rebirth.

Here in Lena, we’ve been enjoying the birth of a new “medicine horse,” a paint,
down the street from us. “Rain” was born at 7 a.m. May 18, and we’ve been out

giving her and her mother “Wind In Trees” some Reiki just about every day.

rainandmom

Here’s “Rain” 3 hours old with her mom, Wind in Trees. Check the Web page
for weekly updates. :-) We went out there Sunday and gave them Reiki; we
turned to go, and Rain came running after us, whinnying. How sweet was her
tiny call! Her mom came up behind her, aloof no more. How could we say no
to giving more Reiki? They love it. (So do we!)

5th Annual Daylong Summer Solstice Ceremonies at Lena

It’s hard to believe that it has been four years since we started this annual event.
Each year is different. The first year, in 2003, we had World Soul Retrieval Day,
where we did outside ceremonies; we did the same the second year, in 2004,
though there was no “official” World Soul Retrieval Day. In 2005 and in 2006,
we had people from the Southern Cherokee Tribe and Associated Bands in Texas
participate and lead Asi (sweat lodge).

This year, we’ll continue with these things, sort of the same, and sort of different.

On the Medicine Wheel of the Seasons, the Solstice is the time of greatest healing,
power, vigor, youth and beauty. It is the qualities that celebrate and seek to access
in our lives.

We are still making plans, and will send out a more detailed agenda before the Solstice
Weekend.

With the new book coming out, I’m rather booked, so to speak on weekends,
but we’ll be remaking the Bear Lodge. This is its fourth year in operation and
it is time that it is remade. We hope to have it up by Solstice. Bear with us, so to speak. J

We're taking it real "loosey goosey" this year, going with the flow.

Tentatively, we have planned:
10 a.m. - Light the flame, opening ceremony.
1 p.m. – Peter Bloom, wisdomkeeper, Heart Song teachings.
7 p.m. - Drum Circle/Medicine Wheel Ceremony (at the house).

Saturday: Sweat Lodge ceremonies, early morning and early afternoon,
Drum Circle/Medicine Wheel ceremony at 7:00p.m., Pot-Luck dinner afterward.
Sunday: Sunrise ceremony, Sweat Lodge ceremony...visiting and fellowship...
See Web page for more (www.blueskywaters.com at “Events”).

For Asi/Inipi:

RSVP ONLY! PLEASE EMAIL IF YOU INTEND TO JOIN US, Space is Limited!

If you plan to do community sweat, bring towel and change of clothes; see
Protocol on the Bear Lodge on Web page,
www.blueskywaters.com

Bring picnic food, chairs, etc., if you plan on visiting at the grounds, and bring
food to share for ceremony.

No alcohol. Children welcome. No charge for anything. Donations welcome.

We will probably have out of town people; lodging is available at The
Carthage Inn, at Carthage 12 miles away; or in Jackson, 50 miles south. We
live way out in the country; bring bug spray, sun lotion. Consider it: a day
in the country.

At the 10 a.m. lighting of the flame, we will be using the “seed candle” we
brought back from New Mexico in 1999; it is from the Dalai Lama’s lighting
of the Millennium Peace Candle. Each year, we start anew by lighting a new
candle for the Medicine Wheel here from the “seed candle” of the Peace
Candle.

dalailamapeace

(Photo: Dalai Lama Lights Peace Candle, 1999)

In years past, I would light a new candle at Winter Solstice, letting the
flame burn through the season, from Solstice through Jan. 1, with prayers
for peace.

I still burn the candle then, but starting at the First Daylong Summer
Solstice Ceremony in 2003, I began lighting the new candle at the Summer
Solstice.

If you want to bring a candle to light it from the candle, you will be
carrying the energy of peace home with you, to your home. Light all your
candles with it, and you will be bringing prayers of peace from the Dalai
Lama, uninterrupted, since the Millennium Candle was lit in 1999.

Come Join us!

Many Blessings,

PathFinder

The Times They Are A Changing: Star Happenings
By Allison Rae (http://www.StarPriestess.com)

The times they are a-changin'. Folk guru Bob Dylan had that right. Tension,
drama, crisis, war, collapse, shortage, disintegration, overthrow, revolution.
That's pretty much how it always goes at the end of a cycle. And we happen
to be at the end of quite a few cycles, not just planetary, but galactic and cosmic.
The end is the beginning.

Planetary transits are really turning up the heat now. (And you thought the past
few years were wild!) Over the next five to seven years and beyond, we'll
experience unprecedented Earth changes, social and political upheaval,
economic shifts, breakthroughs in science, medicine, technology, media and the arts
. . . and mass spiritual awakening.

Can you imagine a more exciting time to be alive on this planet?

The next few years will be the most intense rollercoaster ride of our lives, and
2007 is a turning point. We have an opportunity to choose how we'll ride this wave,
what to hold onto (precious little) and what to let go (more than we think).

Vast cycles are ending. It's time for the new. What do the heavens reveal about
the changes and opportunities we're experiencing on Earth?

Pluto has been transiting back and forth over the degree of the Galactic Center
in late Sagittarius since late 2006, and this year Jupiter joined the party.
Watch for their explosive conjunction on December 11, after they've both crossed the GC.

Saturn in Leo trines Pluto in Sagittarius on August 6. This is a turning point
in the same Saturn-Pluto cycle that shockingly changed our reality with the
events of September 11, 2001. This year's trine is a choice point. How will
we as individuals, communities and nations respond under intense pressure
to evolve, six years after 9/11? And is it a coincidence that we have a New Moon
Solar Eclipse on September 11 this year?

Jupiter squares Uranus and trines Saturn three times each this year.
Unexpected opportunities and breakthroughs are likely. Saturn and Neptune
continue their opposition that began in August 2006. Outdated forms are
dissolved to make way for more evolved expressions. Leadership is transformed
to better serve humanity.

Right now, the 120-year Uranus-Pluto cycle that began in 1961 is being activated
with the initial energies of a prolonged square that becomes exact in 2011.
This first-quarter square in the Uranus-Pluto cycle will propel us through the
2012 gateway and into new, uncharted dimensions. The dance is intensified
in 2010-2011 as Saturn forms a T-square in cardin
al signs with the two planets associated with upheaval, destruction, chaos,
power and revolution.

During this period, there are no sacred cows. E-v-e-r-ything is subject to
destruction, to be reconfigured at a higher level. Whether you're looking
at the Mayan calendar, Eygptian, Western, Vedic, galactic or any other
timekeeping/astrological system, this IS the 2012 transition.
It's a period of time, not a specific year or day. We're in it, now.

How will we manage ourselves? What will we take with us into the next cycle?
What will we create?

New Book – Finally!! – Coming Out This Month:

My new book, Finding Sanctuary in Nature: Simple Ceremonies in the Native
American Tradition should be out in bookstores later this month. It seems like
forever since I started on it, and here it is about to be on bookshelves.

This is the second book in the trilogy I’m writing on shamanism.
The first book Clearing: A Guide to Liberating Energies Trapped in
Buildings and Lands, is about places. This book, Finding Sanctuary,
is about people. The third book, which should be out in the fall,
is about things (specifically, the Plant and Animal Nations).
So, the trilogy is about shamanism, environmental shamanism to
be precise, involving people, places and things.

I hope that you will buy a copy, read it, then write me to share what you think for the newsletter!

Notice the bumble bee. The scientists tell us that the insect is aerodynamically
unsuited for flight. It’s a good thing the bee doesn’t listen to scientists.
It does as Creator would have it do. Creator’s instructions often defy rationality.
But if we listen to Creator, we can walk on water, or fly. Even when others tell us
that it cannot be so. Listen to Creator.

Aho.
